He couldn't find some in his database. I couldn't find some at USCO. 1950 was a crossover year. Those that neither of us could find are safe to upload.

Even the ones that you couldn't find renewed but could've been renewed before 1978? Are those safe to Upload as well?

Also, could you check the JD flicks for me as well, I'd be much appreciative if you could man :D

Movies in the list that were made in 1951 and afterward, and for which I couldn't find a renewal, are safe to upload.

I'll check the JD films later. Gotta give my brain a rest with some mindless entertainment!

Lol and truthfully, that's not even the complete list of Noirs that I have! I just didn't feel like going through every single one! I'll make a smaller list later on of other Noirs and rare horror films that i've got from the 40s and 50s :D.

My database doesn't contain renewals made after 1977. A film released in 1950 could have been renewed in 1977 or 1978, so you have to make sure that neither billbarstad nor I can find a renewal for a 1950 film. (He looks up renewals at the .gov site, which doesn't include renewals made before 1978.)

No copyrights have expired on U.S. films released after 1963, because no renewal needed to be made (renewals were automatic). As bill said, you have to check for a valid copyright notice in the beginning or end credits.

For example, "Night of the Living Dead" is p.d. because it lacks a copyright notice.

According to Video-Cellar, a film released after 1977 could be copyrighted even if it lacks a notice:

"If a film released between 1 Jan 1978 and 1 March 1989 had no
copyright notice it could be registered with 5 years of
publication to get copyright protection."

So theres no way of video-cellar to tell whether those movies are PD or not?

So all I gotta do is look at the beginning credits and ending credits on finding out whether or not they're pd..... Do they just say Copyright or is it in some form of sentence lol. Sorry if I sound confusing, imma start going through them to find out.

Someone has to determine whether they have valid copyright notices.

As bill said, a valid notice must have 3 things:

1. The word "Copyright" or the copyright symbol. A C within parentheses like this (C) is NOT acceptable.

2. The year (can be Roman numerals or modern).

3. The name of the holder of the copyright.

If one of these is lacking, the film is p.d. unless it was released in 1978 or later and it was registered within 5 years.

Well okay, heres the thing, and I need your opinion on this. Okay for example, I bought a 12-DVD Collection of Blaxploitation films right? The thing is TWO of those movies that are in that collection are already on this site --- "Black Fist" and "The Guy From Harlem" I've further researched this collection on Google and some of the results have come up through other Message Forums on the internet and some of the people who've posted on these threads have indeed said that they are public domain prints and what not.
